St Barbara Medal - Patron Saint of Miners, Mathematicians and Explosive Workers
Silver medal of Saint Barbara, made in Italy from nickle and lead free pewter. It has a lightly oxidised finish to bring out the detail and has the words Pray For Us on the reverse.
Saint Barbara’s history is not well recorded, but she was well-known by the 7th century. Her story is one of being imprisoned by her own father, but even so she managed to secretly arrange for a Christian priest to baptize her. Her father was so enraged he turned her over to the authorities who had her tortured and beheaded - by her own father. During this time many miracles occurred, including the father being killed by lightening upon Barbara’s death at his hands. Barbara was buried by a Christian, Valentinus, and her tomb became the site of miracles.
As one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, Barbara continues to be a popular saint in modern times, perhaps best known as the patron saint of armourers, artillerymen, military engineers, miners and others who work with explosives and also of mathematicians. She is celebrated as a saint in the Catholic, Anglican & Eastern Orthodox churches with a feast day of December 4.
