Paternoster with Memento Mori, Agate, Jasper & Copper
This small paternoster is based on styles popular in the 16th century Renaissance period of religious history, which is when rosaries linked with wire through each bead started becoming popular alongside the older style made on string or cord.
This looped paternoster is made with 8mm round jasper beads, separated with little copper links. The loop of 10 prayer beads meets at a forged metal heart, which connects it to the front drop. Just above the heart on each side of the loop are 2 tiny black memento mori skull beads.
The front drop has 2 larger agate gaud beads (Our Father beads), and 3 more prayer beads. The paternoster is completed with a forged Sacred Heart cross. Both the heart & the cross have an antiqued copper finish like ancient treasures from times past.
Memento Mori means literally "reminders of death", and used to be popular additions to any rosary. You can read a bit about memento mori here.
Length: 33cm /3 inches;
Cross: 3cm / 1.25 inches tall.
I don't try and make exact replicas of antique prayer beads. My paternosters are based on design influences from the past, incorporated with modern materials & techniques. In this way we can today share in the long story of prayer beads down through the centuries.
The paternoster comes in a handmade pouch to keep it in, along with info cards about paternosters and memento mori.
