Irish Penal Rosary, Green Nephrite Jade, Celtic Cross & Pewter Thumb Ring
This impressive single decade green jade rosary is made in the tradition of the Irish Penal rosary - An Paidrin Beag - with a single decade of the rosary in a straight line with a crucifix at one end and a thumb ring at the other.
This rosary is made with green nephrite jade beads - known as greenstone in New Zealand. The beads are a large size (10mm round) for those who prefer the ease of handling bigger beads, and the Our Father bead is a hand-cut nugget of greenstone. A traditional Irish Penal crucifix and a beaten pewter ring complete the design.
The beads are linked with stainless steel rosary wire, and joined with double rings. The Our Father bead is held between 2 steel cubes & wire-wrapped - very strong construction.
The design of the Irish Penal rosary traces back to the period of Irish history commonly known as "the Penal Times". A period of religious oppression for Catholics, praying the rosary was forbidden on pain of harsh penalty.
The devout developed a short form of the rosary that could easily be hidden up a sleeve or in a fist, just one decade of Hail Mary beads, a single Our Father bead and a crucifix. A ring at one end served as both a counter of the number of decades prayer by shifting it from finger to finger as each was completed, and as a way of preventing the rosary from accidentally dropping into view.
