Antiqued Silver Catholic Mary Medal, Sodalis Mariae & Sacred Heart
This is a beautifully designed medal of the Virgin Mary with the words "Sodalis Mariae," referring to the "Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary." On the back is an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Sodality of Our Lady is a Roman Catholic Society devoted to Mary which traces its origins back to the 1500s when the first sodality was founded. The purpose of a sodality "aims at fostering in its members an ardent devotion, reverence, and filial love towards the Blessed Virgin Mary."
This medal is most likely from The Children of Mary Sodality which was started after Saint Catherine Laboure's revelation from the Blessed Virgin Mary around 1835.
The medal has been re-cast from a vintage original, nickle & lead free pewter with an antiqued silver finish.
Size: 4.2cm tall including the top loop, and 2.3cm across at the widest part. Comes with a silver-tone steel split-ring through the loop on top for attaching.
