Saint Francis was born at Assisi in 1182. Like many of the early saints, he lived a very simple life of poverty, and gained a reputation for being the friend of animals. He established the rule of St Francis which exists today as the Order of St Francis, or the Franciscans. While in deep meditation in September of 1224 Francis received the stigmata, which bled periodically during the remaining two years of his life. St Francis is considered to be the patron of peace, ecologists, environmentalists, families, merchants, tapestry workers, needle workers, zoos, animals and birds. He died of natural causes in 1226, aged 44.
