St. Benedict of Nursia (in Italy), born c. 480 and died at Monte Cassino in 573 “while standing in prayer before God.” He was born of high stature, the son of a Roman noble. In the height of his young life he abandoned his books, and forsook “his father’s house and wealth, with a mind only to serve God…”
Benedict is credited with being the founder of Western Christian monasticism and well known for his Rule that "Christ ... may bring us all together to life eternal." Most religious communities founded throughout the Middle Ages adopted it and, as a result, the Rule of Benedict became one of the most influential religious rules in Western Christendom.
