New Zealand Paua Shell Rosary, Madonna & Child Center
This unique Catholic rosary is handmade by me using natural paua shell beads (NZ's native abalone shell). The rosary is made with double-sided round paua beads for the Hail Marys, all separately linked with silver rosary wire. The Our Father beads are 12mm paua diamonds which are wire-wrapped with small blue Swarovski crystals that go with the colors in the shell.
The center connector shows the Madonna & Child, and the cross is a traditional "budded" style with blue enamel inset. The arms of the cross end in 3-pointed bud shapes, reflecting the 3-fold nature of the Holy Trinity. Taken together, there are 12 buds which tell of the 12 Apostles going out from the cross to carry the Good News to the world.
Length from center-back to end of crucifix: 60cm / 23.5 inches;
Crucifix: 4cm / 1.6 inches tall.
The vibrant colors in the paua shell used for these beads is only found in the cold southern waters of New Zealand which causes the shells to have iridescent purple, blue and pink interiors from which the beads are made. Other countries have a different type of abalone shell, which is a more pearly, less colorful sea shell. Paua is sustainably farmed in New Zealand.
This is a full-size rosary which is lightweight and smooth in the hands. It comes in a handmade (by me) lined cotton pouch to keep it in and will be attractively wrapped.
