Large St Benedict Chaplet for Prayer or Wall Rosary, Greenstone
Here is a substantial chaplet featuring a medal of Saint Benedict, which is suitable for holding in the hands during prayer, or for use as a wall hanging or home altar/shrine piece.
The design is based on the 3 Hail Marys chaplet, with three main prayer beads which can be used for recitation of the Hail Mary prayer. Other familiar prayer used with this type of chaplet re the Apostle's Creed, the Glory Be and the Our Father prayers.
The main beads are hand-cut faceted nephrite jade (greenstone) nuggets, each about 20mm to 25mm across. I've wire-wrapped these large beads with smaller black Czech glass nuggets, and used heavy silver-plated links between them. The construction is sturdy so the chaplet will last for many years of prayer.
At one end is a large 10cm tall (4 inch) trefoil cross, also known as a "budded crucifix". This style of cross has 3 rounded "buds" at the end of each arm, and when it has the body of Christ on it, it become a crucifix. The cross and figure are silver-plated pewter and the black inlay is jet (not enamel).
There are several meanings for the 3 round buds. The most commonly known is that they represent the three-fold nature of God - God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Another layer of meaning is that when added together there are 12 buds, which represent the 12 Apostles who went out from the cross to marry the Good News to the world.
The medal at the other end is also larger than usual in a chaplet, at 3.5cm tall (1.4 inches). On this medal you can see Saint Benedict on one side and his ward (prayer of protection) on the other in a very traditional design.
Overall length: 44cm / 17.3 inches.
A great presentation item on a special occasion, which is equally as suitable for prayerful use as it is for display.
