Middle Ages Style Jasper & Agate Rosary, Bronze Holy Face of Jesus Icon
Handmade linked rosary beads with bronze Holy Face of Jesus Orthodox icon pendant and natural gemstone beads. The Middle Ages included the European Renaissance period, a time that inspired the design for this large jasper & agate bead rosary.
By the 15th century, rosaries linked with metal wire were commonplace, alongside the older styles of rosaries linked with cord or ribbon. Design features included medals and icons attached to the prayer beads, as well as embellishments such as decorative chain or links.
This rosary has fairly large beads, 10mm round jasper Aves and 15mm agate Paters, each separately linked with bronze rosary wire. The Paters (Our Father beads) are decorated with bronze bead caps and then wire-wrapped to provide extra strength.
Jasper and agate are hard, durable stones that have been used for centuries for prayer beads, weapons & household utensils. These beads have rich colors of the earth ranging from cream to brown and green.
There are 5 decades of prayer beads and like many rosaries from the Middle Ages, there is no center medal as is usually seen in modern rosaries. This set is completed with a large solid bronze icon medal of the Holy Face of Jesus, which has been reproduced from an Orthodox Russian icon pendant.
Length when hanging: 66cm / 26 inches;
Icon pendant: 5.5cm x 3.5cm / 2.25 x 1.4 inches.
A unique rosary for personal prayer, wall or decor, or adding to a collection. In use, the rosary has a nice substantial feel without being too heavy for comfortable handling, and flows nicely through the hands..
